Cricketers ready to hit the pitch

Now that the winter codes have gone into hibernation, the spotlight swings back to the cricket pitch as the South West Slopes Cricket Association is set to shine, gearing up for another summer of big hits with the bat and some local rivalry. The sound of leather on willow will return on Saturday with the first games of the 2026/27 season. The season is shaping up to be a cracker and will continue the format from last year’s edition. Adam Swanston, who has retained his position as the Association’s Secretary, said the draw had been released earlier this week. “There are 12 teams confirmed with Boorowa to be confirmed,” Swanston said. “There will be one grade this year until Christmas, with the teams splitting into A and B grades after Christmas.” Unfortunately, Junee, the Murringo Mavericks and a Grenfell team have dropped out of the competition for various reasons. “It’s getting harder and harder for clubs to find guys to help out,” Swanston said. “Increased costs are probably another factor.” The junior cricketers have not been forgotten as the summer sport retains its popularity among the youth. “The Juniors look good with possibly 12 or 13 teams in Under 13’s, which would be the most ever,” Swanston said. “We’re hoping for a minimum of six teams in 16’s again.” This season will include a mix of fast-paced Twenty/20 clashes and some traditional 40-over clashes. As the first balls are bowled and local rivalries reignite, the cricket season is ready to deliver another summer of big hits and spectacular catches. In Saturday’s opening One-Day round, the Temora teams will face off against each other in two local derby games. The Temora Bowling Club Tigers A grade side will take on the B grade team at Nixon Park at 1.30pm and the Temora Shamrock Leprechauns will play against the Temora Exies Renegades at The Oval at 1.30pm.
