Temora Vets: Delta Ag Shield Stableford Golf was on, then it was called off, then it was on again. What the hell is our secretary bloody well doing? Mate, we had blokes turn up for a casual hit only for them to find the vets comp was on. It was total confusion out there. I have my doubts if he will survive another term in office. He won’t be getting my vote, I’ll give you the drum. As it turned out, a total of 20 players were out at the golf course for one reason or another. We had a starter arrive, so groups were organised, and off we went. Another day of belting the hell out a little white dimpled ball. Apart from the secretary’s brain fades, it was a damn good day. Comradery within the vets is exceptional, and we always seem to have a good laugh. With 38 points, Jason Fernie (11) was too good on the day. His big drives paved the way for an impressive win. His tee shot on the par-3 twelfth, which led to a birdie, was one of many highlights. Jason’s tee-shot finished 0.75 centimetres from the hole, and what was so special to me was that he knocked off our secretary for the nearest the pin prize, how cool is that? Runner-up was the Pizza King, Anthony Madden (11) with 35 points. Anthony had birdies on holes 12 and 14, so you could say he was hitting them pretty good too. Ball winners: Muriel Napper (50) with 34 points, Bill Ingram (18) 33 points, Bill Robertson (13) 32 points, Darryl Jordan (7) (Howlong GC) 31 points, Gary Zacher (31) 31 points. Delta Ag points: Bill Ingram 6, Bill Robertson 5, Darry Jordan 4, Gary Zacher 3, Bob Brabin 2. Nearest the pins: Seventh Dave Loftus 4 metres, Twelfth Jason Fernie 0.75 centimetres, sixteenth Bob Brabin 3.6 metres. On the drive and chip Third Peter Cartwright almost jagged a hole-out but his ball rammed into the flagstick and nestled just 10 centimetres away. Probably the easiest par Pete has ever had. On the eighth Mal Krause showed his talents by leaving himself a seven-metre putt for birdie, unfortunately, his putt slid past the hole, but an easy par was had. The skins: All players on the one sheet, and a good idea it is. Muriel Napper showed us what she can do when she puts her mind on the job. Muriel parred the par-4, eighth and enjoyed the 5 points that came with it. She claimed seven skins for $7.00. Well done Muriel, we hope to see you again next week. Darryl Jordan won three skins, and Ray Jennings won a $1.00 for his three point putt on the first hole. Kitty was boosted with a $7.00 payday. Shot of the day: My nice guy, Peter Cartwright gets the nod. Playing the par-3, third hole, Peter hit a low runner, obviously keeping his ball under the wind and trying to get as much run as he can. Pete’s ball finished short of the green, probably about 25 meters, give or take a metre. I didn’t ask Peter on his club selection for his second shot, but it appeared to be a straight-faced club. He hit another ‘under the wind’ shot, and it was on target, heading for the flag. His ball jammed into the hole, but the forward lean on the flagstick prevented Peter’s ball from going in. He had an easy tap-in for par, but it would have been a lot sweeter if his ball wasn’t afraid of the dark. As Peter said, “a birdie would have been nice”. Another one, but it’ll be quick: Dave Loftus hit a gorgeous 6-iron onto the par-3, twelfth. It bored its way through the wind and settled 2.5 metres from the hole. Jason Fernie is in the same group and he is up next. He hits the most beautiful high fade, with the ball stopping just 0.75 centimetres from the hole. You should have seen Dave’s stunned look as the nearest-the-pin prize was snatched out of his grasp. It was a sight to treasure. That was just awesome Jason. On Thursday 10 September, we are playing the Intersales Cup, which is a stroke event. Visitors are welcome to play as long as they are a member of a golf club with an official golf ID and, or GA handicap. If you are not a financial member of a golf club but would like to play with the vets, remember this: the visitors greens fee of $20.00 and the comp fee of $12.00 will be your cost. Ladies Golf On Saturday our Ladies competed in the Monthly Medal event, sponsored by Sharon Wilmott. Winner on the day was Pip Bleyer with 84 off the stick and 73 nett. Runner up was Nat Irvine with 89 off the stick, also having a 73 nett. Ball winners: Paige Starling 119 off the stick, 74 nett Marg Townsend 100 off the stick, 75 nett Deb Block 93 off the stick, 77 nett Judy Gorton 94 off the stick, 77 nett Nearest the pins: Third (D and C): Marg Townsend 59 centimetres Twelfth (NTP): Judy Gorton 8.7 metres Sixteenth (D and C): Sue Tier 50 centimetres Sunday Golf September Men's monthly medal. The September Monthly medal was held on Father’s Day and there was only one story worthy of a mention. Steve Steinhardt shot the lights out of it recording a round that included five birdies, an eagle, one bogey and 11 pars. That all adds up to a six under par 65. Playing off a daily handicap of two, Steiny took out the A grade monthly medal and daily Stableford competition with 63 nett and 44 points. He now reaps the benefits of playing off a 0 handicap. Well done Steve - that certainly is a round to remember. Runner up on the day was Anthony Madden who also had a fantastic round with 38 points. Anthony played early and had a quiet confidence of taking home the win until news of Steinys round got out. The B grade medal was won by Phil Bleyer who shot a 73 nett. Ball comp: Jason Fernie 36 points P Linnegar 34 points Phil Bleyer 34 points A Phillips 33 points C McAuley 33 points Ntps: Third: untouched Seventh: P Linnegar 8.90 metres Twelfth: Kevin Flakelar 1.98 metres Sixteenth: Steve Steinhardt 3.60 metres Gazannes drive and chip 18th - Anthony Madden 4.63 metres Next Sunday is the Greens Keeper Revenge. Ladies are more than welcome to play. It will be played as a Stableford event. Expect the unexpected with tees to be moved and pin placements in unusual spots. Scoring will be done on the Golf Genius app but due to the course layout your scores won't be posted to your GA handicap. Scores won’t be counted to your Eclectic either. Coolamon Golf By THOMAS GOSS It was a mixed bag of golf last weekend. Fields were reduced as a consequence of football finals and the precipitation ruined Saturday’s event for most. A few hit off early and were able to complete their rounds largely unmolested by the rain. The main groups teed off just as the drizzle started, making it as annoying as a hyperactive blowfly buzzing around the ear in the dead of night. Aggravating but playable. Over nine holes the moisture grew steadily heavier precipitating most of the groups to pull the pin after nine holes looking as bedraggled and drenched as drowned rats. Ten minutes after these intrepid players started moistening the insides as well, the rain magically disappeared. Alas too late. For a couple of the lads who shall remain nameless it was an opportunity to blow out a few accumulated cobwebs. Drenched on the outside they reasoned, in the ying and yang of life, that they may as well be sodden the inside as well. Eight dedicated hours later they had well and truly reached their objective - as inebriated as a group of Irishmen left unattended in a well-stocked brewery on St Patrick’s day. Great dedication lads. There were two groups who disdained such tomfoolery and headed out unto the elements to finish their rounds. Jackson Quinnell defied the dampness to register a fine 39 points streets ahead of Matt Hard on 33 with Ian Nottley claiming the pink ball, albeit in a severely reduced field. With the milder weather on Sunday a slightly larger field contested the Stableford event. Frankenstein McCaig had a tooth and nail battle right to the very last hole with The Grubster only getting the better of his ancient enemy on a countback with both finishing on 37 points. Geoff Wilson filled out the podium on 33. Earwig Broadhurst, Grub’s offspring won his dad a Father’s Day present claiming the pink ball after he imploded on the second nine. No DNA test will ever be needed there. Trev Jose took leave of his senses for the day and was rewarded with the raffle prize after a somewhat less than inspirational round. Nearest the pin and Drive and Chip prizes went to Bruce, Ray, Ray, Grub, Stu and Stu. This weekend golf will take a definite back seat to the Football Grand Final. Coolamon is seeking a long-awaited premiership after our best ever home and away season. The following poem was used to help inspire the team to a mighty victory in 2000. Let’s hope it works again. The Magic of Football “The pumping heart of country towns is their football team, The games provide pressure valve, a chance to hope and dream. The golden gifts it grants our youth can set them up for life, An outlet for their youthful zest, and keeps them free from strife. And crucial too for older folk, for there they can unwind, And join the battle on the field (if only in the mind). It grants a sense of unity, a belonging and a worth, And epic victories make us feel like Emperors of the earth. But finals are our special days and if a flag is won, The memories last forever as our one day in the sun. A premiership decider is a huge demanding test, So, summon the blood, fight like hell and play like men possessed. And remember who you’re playing for as you burst onto the field, Yourself, your coach, your teammates, so fight and never yield. And also, as you face the foe for glory and renown, You’re playing too for Coolamon, our nest our home our town.” It’s been far too long. It’s time for a Coolamon premiership. Go you mighty Greenmen. Ariah Park Golf It was a bit tough going on Saturday for golfers of Ariah Park with the weather playing tricks on us, starting off with drizzle rain and windy to sunny day and no wind, so it was hard to gather our thoughts and ideas as how to play each hole. We had nine players turn up to play for the Ian and Kaylene Haddick Stableford event. We also had the pleasure of three ladies playing who were visitors from Victoria and were camped at the adjacent caravan park. The three of them enjoyed their golf while their husbands enjoyed the beer by the fire bucket. Stuff the golf, they said – “Too bloody cold, a nice plonk by the fire was the go” they reckon. Pity we didn’t take their advice. Camo, Zac and I started the day off on a good note with Camo playing his usual good game with long drive and even better fairway shots while Zac and myself just were happy to hit them straight. Zac only had a couple of hiccups and ring-barked the pine trees on his favourite nineth hole. Barry was up to his usual bag of tricks by chipping in off the green not once but twice and being the very humble man that he is, he just went on with the job. Stimulating form, he is in at the moment – I think that scare he got a few weeks ago – the “dunce chair” – might have kick-started his golf form. Well played old fella, on the other side of the coin Robbo the Scotsman was in fine form of his own – the old boy can play when he is in the mood. But most times his analogy of all things golf is quite amazing, such as when putting he insists the ball must have a three-quarter cut with a 2 degree to the left for a long putt or the Sea of Tranquillity – for a missed putt. Your guess is as good as ours as to what the devil he is talking about – but when playing with him you sure get a lesson on all things golf – he being a Scotsman complains about the cold – figure that one out – he can’t. Rocky’s form has slipped a bit and even Robbo reckons golf lessons from Merrill would be in order. Rocky, you could also learn a trick or two from Zac – I know you have ideas about cheaning up the scrub but you don’t have to spend so much time in there – or are you just looking for lost balls (Heaven knows). But it’s fun to watch you in the rabbit trappers no man’s land. Perko and Maree continued to play good golf with Perko declaring after playing with Robbo last week and copping an earful of Scottish humour he swore that things could only get better when he was in for an absolute shock as Maree, who was playing alright, decided on a few occasions to let fly with the odd abusive swear word which was “NOT” directed at him – but to the miss-hit ball. But Perko reckons he learnt a few words he hasn’t heard for a while. Merrill on the other hand just gets on with playing and doesn’t seem to worry about anything to distract her from playing even when she’s not hitting the ball well. When she and Maree play together, they bring out the best in each other. Back to Robbo, he reckons he won the best dressed again and because he didn’t play golf that well (too cold) we let him believe he won the prize. Now on the subject of Robbo – the poor man had a “wee” accident at home – woke sitting on his chain swinging egg chair secured from the rafter in his car port – well he sits in the egg chair every day – and car and people watch. Well, he must have seen a lovely lady walk past and got excited – the whole thing came crashing down with him in it onto the concrete – to us a small fall but to him the story was a bit hard to believe – a bruised ass and ego. Shock waves on Wagga Road – said he couldn’t even walk (I find that hard to believe). Bruised and battered and with his Scottish spirit he rolled up to play. What a man he is – and what a laugh we all had at his expense. Back we go to the clubhouse for a lovely feed of mixed sangers made and supplied by our sponsor Kaylene and Ian Haddick. So, thanks guys. Cards tallied – winner winner haggis dinner – Ian Haddick Trophy – Camo. Winner winner another haggis dinner – Kaylene Haddick Trophy – Maree. N.T.P. third – Yours truly – bloody top shot (sank the putt for a birdie). N.T.P. eighth – Robbo. Don’t know how – but the poor man struggled all day. So, we will give it to him – missed the putt, didn’t take the 2 degrees plus two-thirds left. So, thanks to the Haddick family for the sponsor day. Shots of the day – Rocky – too many to mention. Ahh bad and in the scrub. Twenty dollars for a lesson is cheap. So, take advantage of it. Robbo says his lessons are free – he will supply the club’s, balls, tees, cart, food and skill set – all for free – $50 a head (bargain). See ya all again next week. Maree’s Day Cheers Preferred Lies Ariah Park Bowls The Ariah Park Bowling Club recently conducted its Annual General Meeting and has appointed a new Board. Nominations were received and the club’s Board has been confirmed for the coming term. The following positions were filled: President: Stephen French Treasurer: Tim Sanders Secretary: Michael Seymour Board Members: • Diane Choice • Les Choice • Chris Cowan • Paul Donoghue • Craig Leiper • Matt Seymour • John Worland Temora Bowling Club Bowls Five-A-Side championship Last Saturday saw a couple of matches in the five-a-side championship played with one game in Section A where Team McKinnon put the cleaners through Team Harpley six points- one point with a strong 17-7 win in the pairs and tight 8-8 draw in the triples. The Fours ended up 13-4 to Team McKinnon as well. Team New had the bye but still retain top spot on the Section A ladder with seven points. This weekend, Team Krause play Team McKinnon while Team Mouawad play Team New. In Section B, Team Cole defeated Team Breust five points- two points. Team Cole won the Pairs 14-8 while Team Breust won the Triples 16-10 to earn two points each. The Fours match was tight until the last two ends where Team Cole surged to a tough 12-6 win to grab the three points on offer for winning the Fours. They now have 10 points overall and are looking strong to gain a top two finish. For one reason or another, Team Jordan failed to show up against Team Cook, at all. Paul Cook, the genius behind the whole Cook outfit has displayed leniency of the highest order to allow Team Jordan to play this match on Saturday otherwise Team Jordan will be adjudged to have forfeited the match due to the fact Team Cook meet Team Breust on Sunday in Round three. The other Section B match for Round three will see Team Keane playing Team Stimson. After five rounds of play, the Winner of Section A will play the runner-up of Section B while the winner of Section B plays the runner-up of Section A in semi-final matches. Places for the top two in each section are wide open and at this stage, anyone can grab a top two spot. Spring Night Bowls Traditionally, this series kicks off after Daylight Savings comes into play on 3 October. The format and dates of play will be announced in the very near future. This should give teams plenty of time to get the players organized for the 8-9 week series. King of the Turf Chief Steward Bomber Edwards’ Media Department are up to their old tricks again. They’ve sent through a report (with photos) showing Les Horan won last week “In A Canter”. As if. No one is gunna believe that. Fair dinkum Bomber. You’re supposed to be the head of a world class racing organisation, not the fabricator of blatant fake news. Les Horan won in a canter. Read that out loud and hear how preposterous it sounds.
