The 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup made a surprise visit to Temora yesterday.

The cup’s committee called into the Temora’s French Hot Bread bakery for breakfast on Thursday morning and staff were quick to jump at the chance of getting their photo taken with the cup.
It’s understood the cup’s crew were on their way to other parts of the district as part of it’s tour of the region.

Meanwhile, several Temora people travelled to the Dirnaseer Town Hall on Wednesday to have their chance to also hold the gold. Temora Shire residents joined members of the Temora Rotary Club who put on a sausage sizzle for the event. Local Temora resident and Dirnaseer Memorial Hall Committee member, Melissa Miller applied for the Melbourne Cup Tour to visit Dirnaseer Hall.

“Dad and I applied to have the Cup Tour visit last year and we actually missed out, so when we found out we had been successful this year we were so excited,” she said.

“Today has been such a great day for the community, everyone has come out from all over Dirnaseer and Temora, and I think we’re still just pinching ourselves the Melbourne Cup is actually here.”

Dirnaseer Hall Committee member, Darren Miller said, “The past few years have been very difficult for the Dirnaseer community due to a prolonged drought, floods and a mouse plague, so it was fantastic to have the cup visit our com- munity.”

The $275,000 trophy, made from 18-carat gold sourced from the Lake Cowal gold mine in Bland Shire, also visited Coolamon, Ardlethan and Ganmain on Thursday.

As part of the tour, people had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Cup and many communities put on morning teas and events top coincide with the visit.
