Temora Shire Library is welcoming new members throughout August as part of the State Library of NSW’s 200-year anniversary celebrations, highlighted locally through the vibrant “Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds” Open Week. The membership drive forms part of a statewide initiative to grow public library membership to 50 percent of the population. Currently, more than three million people—around 40% of NSW residents—are members of their local library. Between 27 and 31 July, Temora Shire Library invited the community to reconnect, explore, and celebrate everything the library has to offer. Across the week, the library came alive with creativity, collaboration and connection. A standout feature was the interactive “Make Your Mark” space, where visitors transformed a white room into a colourful, ever-evolving artwork with thousands of stickers. Community members also added their own drawings and messages to the library’s front window, creating a vibrant display of shared expression. Local schools were welcomed into the library throughout the week, with students engaging in a range of activities and discovering the many resources available to them. A large community puzzle invited visitors of all ages to contribute, piece by piece, building a shared sense of achievement and connection. While books allow readers to explore new places, perspectives and ideas, new members also have the chance to win a real-life adventure. Anyone who joins throughout August is automatically entered into a prize draw, with a $250 Riverina Adventure Sports voucher as first prize, a $75 cinema voucher as second, and a Child at Heart hamper from Junee Licorice and Chocolate as third. Current members can also enter by referring a friend to join any Riverina Regional Library branch. Zac Armistead from Riverina Regional Library said the promotion was designed to attract people who may not usually visit their library. “Libraries are for everyone, but not everyone knows what’s on offer at their local library,” Mr Armistead said. “Libraries aren’t just about books. They also provide access to free online resources, audiobooks, holiday programs and community events. “We know they help to create healthier and more connected communities.” The membership promotion closes on Monday 31 August.
