The Temora Rugby Union Club’s women’s side (Tuskerettes) has advanced straight into this season’s Central West Rugby Union South West Fuels Cup Grand Final.

The Tuskerettes will soon have the chance to etch their name in the history books by claiming four consecutive premierships following their 38-15 win against the Grenfell Pink Panthers in the Major Semi-Final last Saturday, highlighted by a Kaesha Maxwell hat-trick.

A dominant first-half display paved the way for the victory, with the Tuskerettes all but having the game wrapped up by halftime as they crossed for five unanswered tries to storm to a 31-0 lead at the break.

Tuskerettes’ coach Bill McCrone said it took some time for his side to settle, with nerves evident during the opening 20 minutes until Molly Greenham broke the deadlock with her trademark show-and-go to score the opening try.

“Our girls’ talk among themselves was fairly quiet for the first quarter of the match and we weren’t as effective as we should have been at the ruck when we had the ball in hand,” McCrone said.

“We started moving the ball from side to side, stretching the Grenfell defensive line and the tactic quickly paid dividends.

“Kaesha Maxwell broke through out wide and raced 50 metres to score, before Abbee Piggott made an immediate impact after coming off the bench.

“With her first touch of the ball, Piggott broke through a tackle and, despite a desperate defensive chase, managed to beat the cover defence to extend our advantage.

“Another Piggott line break put us deep inside attacking territory and we worked the ball across the field before finding the dangerous Monique Kitchener, who burst through to score.”

Maxwell racked up her second try before halftime.

The second half was a different contest, with the Tuskerettes struggling for discipline and repeatedly penalised for offside infringements.

With possession swinging their way, Grenfell applied sustained pressure and eventually cracked the Tuskerettes’ defensive line twice.

“I’m not sure whether we were just over enthusiastic after how well we’d played in that first half or what, but our discipline in the second half is something we’ll need to work on,” McCrone said.

“We held firm for long periods, but the Pink Panthers are too talented a side to be given that much possession and eventually found a way through for two tries.

“A series of promising phases finally got us back on the attack and Maxwell produced another powerful finish, barging through the Grenfell defence to complete her hat-trick and effectively seal the result.”

McCrone was thrilled with his team’s effort, particularly the first-half performance, but maintained that there is still room for improvement.

“We’ll have a couple of things to work on,” he said.

“Our talk and organisation early on wasn’t where it needs to be and our discipline in that second half gave them a chance to get back in the game, but I’m proud of the effort of all the girls today.”

In the Minor Semi-Final game, Harden advanced after defeating Wyalong 27-15 and will face Grenfell for the right to challenge the Tuskerettes in the Grand Final.

Boorowa’s men’s team secured the right to host this year’s grand finals at the Boorowa Showground by becoming the first side to book its place in the men’s decider.

It is familiar territory for the Tuskerettes as it is the same venue where they lifted the trophy 12 months ago.
