Rider safety comes first on e-bikes

Temora Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer Steven Bloomfield is urging people to familiarise themselves with the road rules on E-bikes and scooters. The message is timely, given it’s the school holidays. Mr Bloomfield said E-bikes and e-scooters were becoming increasingly common in regional NSW, but riders need to understand that not every electrically powered device sold as an e-bike or scooter is legal to use in public. “A legal E-bike in NSW must be primarily propelled by the rider pedalling,” he said. “The electric motor can assist the rider but must cut out at 25 km/h. “Currently, permitted e-bikes can have a maximum continuous rated power of up to 500 watts, depending on the type of E-bike and its specifications. “Modified bikes, throttle-only devices and bikes capable of exceeding the applicable requirements may not be legal for road or public-path use.” Anyone considering purchasing an e-bike should check its specifications carefully. A reputable bicycle retailer should be able to advise whether a particular model is suitable and legal for use on NSW roads and paths. However, E-scooters are different. “There is currently no general legal use of E-scooters on NSW public roads and paths, outside specific government-approved arrangements,” Mr Bloomfield said. “NSW Police and Transport for NSW can take enforcement action against illegal or modified devices, including seizure in appropriate circumstances. “Visibility is particularly important in regional areas. “When riding at night or in poor visibility, use the required front and rear lights and reflectors, wear bright or reflective clothing and make yourself as visible as possible to other road users. “Know what you’re buying, check that it is legal, wear a helmet, be visible and ride responsibly.”
