Congratulations go to local quilter/textile artist, Carol Glasgow, in winning the “Viewers’ Choice” award at a recent Canberra Quilters exhibition. This exhibition took place in the Bundawang Pavilion at EPIC, Exhibition Park in Canberra, 21-24 May, in conjunction with a CraftAlive event. This 2026 show was extra special for Canberra Quilters Inc, as this year the guild celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark the golden milestone, the guild hosted a special “Gold” quilt challenge. The challenge was open to all quilters from Australia and New Zealand. Quilters were free to use their own interpretation of the theme, “Gold”. Each quilt entered had to measure 40 by 100 centimetres, in a portrait orientation. The original plan was for the best 30 entries to be juried into the exhibition. However, the quality of the 45 entries was considered so high, that all were exhibited. Entries were from all the eastern states, South Australia and New Zealand. Included were entries by published authors and well-known designers and teachers. All entries had to be accompanied by an “Artist’s Statement”. Carol’s entry was titled “Canola Gold”, and her Artist’s Statement was as follows: “As soon as I read of this challenge, I immediately pictured in my mind the beautiful image of the countryside, through August and September, swathed in the glowing gold of flowering canola crops. Often set against a row of blue rolling hills, and framed by stately eucalypts, the scene is nothing short of spectacular. Paddock after paddock, as far as the eye can see…...a sea of gold. “This golden wonder has become a yearly tourist attraction, bringing visitors from far and wide to experience the beautiful sight. “Along with so many others, I have often marvelled at the scene and taken dozens of photos. “This quilt is a compilation of these images, and an expression of my delight in experiencing this golden wonder”. Carol’s quilt was constructed as a collage, using torn strips, fussy cutting, raw edge applique, confetti work, and Free Motion Domestic Machine quilting/embroidery.
