Temora Vets: Delta Ag Shield: Stableford Richard Starling (31) drove his golf ball off the 18th tee like a seasoned pro. His ball landed in the middle of the fairway about 40 meters past the mound. Richard was having one of those frustrating days, and seeing that this was his last hole for the day, he put a little bit more of an effort into his drive and his approach shot to the green. A 3-metal was his club of choice for his second shot, and didn’t he hit it sweet. His ball headed straight for the flagstick. Witnesses revealed to me that his ball made its way up the false front and brushed against the flagstick, nearly dropping in for an eagle-3. Richard’s ball stopped rolling just 85 centimeters past the hole, an easy putt for his birdie and, and get this, 5 points. What a way to finish off a round of golf mate. You’ll be back next week. The winner of the Delta Ag Shield was David Meale (28) with 38 points c/b. Runner-up to Dave was Sharon Wilmott (27) with 38 points as well. Shaz played a good round of golf, and with the right bounce here or there, it could have been a different story. Ball winners: Judy Gorton (23) 37 points c/b, Phil Bleyer (15) 37 points, Peter Cartwright (27) 35 points c/b, Trevor Jose (23) 35 points c/b, Mike Daley (12) 35 points c/b. Barry Flakelar (9) 35 points. Delta Ag points: David Meale 6, Sharon Wilmott 5, Judy Gorton 4, Phil Bleyer 3, Peter Cartwright 2. Nearest the pins: 3rd Mark Wells 2.99m, 7th Barry Flakelar 2.34m, 12th Charley Watson with a magnificent shot of just 1.21m. 16th Bob Brabin 6.70m. Drive and chip: The 3rd hole was won by Anthony Abra with 1.16m, Harry Wilson back from a little R&R, won the 8th with 2.35m. The skins: Col McCrone won 6 skins for $6.00, Mike Daley 4, Charlie Watson, Phil Bleyer, and Bob Brabin 3 each. Harry Wilson, Judy Gorton, Aaron Coddington, Ray Jennings, and Bill Robertson 2 each. Sharon Wilmott, David Meale, and Mal Krause won a skin each. The kitty banked $1.00 towards the bbq fund. We had Charlie Watson join us last Thursday, and hasn’t this young mans golf improved. Charlie consistently hit his golf ball off the tee to an average distance of roughly 270 meters. It was magnificent watching Charlie and Aaron Coddington go at it off the tee. Charlie would edge ahead on one hole and Aaron would get him back on the next. I was paired with Gavin Holt and we would just look at each other and shake our heads in amazement. Next Thursday is the Intersales Cup, a stroke event, and if I can remember to buy the snags, we will be having a bbq after golf. Ladies Golf Last week our ladies event was a two person Ambrose, sponsored by the Shamrock Hotel. Winners on the day with 75 off the stick, and 64 1/2 nett were Maureen Lynch and Nora Saffioti. On Saturday we also have a charity 4 person ambrose raising money for Country Hope. $60 entry per player which includes a BBQ lunch and there are some great prizes up for grabs for both scratch and nett divisions. Please contact Heather Greenham or Aaron Coddington to register your teams. Nominations would be greatly appreciated before Saturday so catering can be arranged. Non handicap and Summer teams player are most welcome. Ariah Park Golf 12 players turned up to play on a very overcast and warm Saturday arvo. Half of the twelve players playing belonging to the Harper clan and by my spies they managed to enjoy the day out although some of them took a keen liking to our scrubhand and rabbit trappers stronghold. Also a couple of them Harper boys even got to ringbark a few trees along the way, so a few lost balls were also unaccounted for. So thanks fellers for the effort and making up the numbers. We enjoyed your company. Robbo was there and full of zest and humour – rattling off as he does before a ball has been hit (if only he could play as well as he says). Well he was in full voice in the club house and the Harper clan had no idea what he was waffling on about. Their face expressions were a mixture of bewilderment, inquisitive, insatiable for more or just an explanation of what he was saying. But guys your guess was as good as ours, good luck with it. No Pikey again this week – still love sick – no Rockin Rollins either. So the chair was taken by the very capable Barry and his new assistant Maree – who also doubled as the interpreter for Scotty. So the cards were done and the handicaps also and off we go. Camo/Robbo/Nappa/Perko and what a battle this was with Robbo trying his best to disrupt us by his trash talking and numerous talk of what degree of difficulty our putting should take – all to no avail as we both took no notice of his crap. Both sides played good golf – Maree/Zac v Robbie/Noah Harper. The boys took full advantage from hitting off the ladies tees, with monster drives and a few in the scrub. But Maree/Zac did come up with a few great shots/putts of their own – Barry/grandson Zac V Grant/Keith. So this was a family affair and they had balls going into no man’s land on numerous occasions. We could hear the sound of ball on wood a few times but also the odd cheer when a long putt was sunk. There was some great hits by a select few – and an Ambrose day playing off the ladies tee is always a good day – getting back to our favourite golfer in Zac – (Robbo disputes this call) his putting has improved the last couple of weeks – but he still finds the scrub and is always good for a lost ball or two. Well, Maree says he did play well – so there is a golfing god after all Zac. I’ve seen Camo hit them better so he is human and is capable of stuffing a shot up and on the 9th he hit the big tree on the right about 20 metres in front and the ball bounced back to him. (Nice shot Buddy) We did have a good tee off on the 8th – over the trees with the four of us all putting the ball on the dance floor with Robbo taking the honour of being the best. But Robbo also had the worst shot on the par 3 third with his ball going sideways – and him saying he hit it sweet – must be close to the pin he claimed – but Camo had to tell the poor bugger what a shocker it was – his excuse was – a fly in his eye – bloody rubbish it was just a shit shot – so no .2 to the left – it went 50 metres right towards the fourth fairway – we laughed loud and long – he wasn’t happy – but life goes on. So we beat the rain and finished our game and back to the club house we go for a few yarns, cold drink and a sanga or two. We also had to take a head count to see if all the Harper crew returned unharmed and unscathed from their Leyland Bros tour of our scrubhand – and after a head count – we declared all golfers present and accounted for – what a relief!!! So Barry and Maree counted the cards up – winners – Nappa/Perko. N.T.P. 3rd: Maree – stole it off Barry this week. (Karma Barry) 8th: Robbo – great shot – about a foot from the hole – fair dinkum. Shot of the Day: Maree – birdie – not the golfing type – but the bird type – hit the poor thing and feathers went everywhere – unluckiest black jay in Ariah Park. Zac Worrall had a birthday – so Maree made him a birthday cake which he appreciated as we all did – so thanks Ree Ree. A thanks Barry for the tucker. Next week a Ambrose off the ladies again – so come along and have some fun – everyone is welcome $10 – Juniors free. Thanks everyone for playing and the Harper crew also. Cheers Preferred Lies. Ariah Park Bowls The semi-finals of the a grade singles have been played. Nodsa Johnstone played Garry Ryall. Nodsa flew out of the gates like a good racehorse and led 15-0 after 8 ends. Ends 9-11 were shared 2-2 with Garry trailing 17-2. That was where Nodsa signalled his intention to go on and win 25-2. The other semi-final was much the same with Mathew Seymour playing Jill Johnstone. Matt led 13-3 after 7 ends. He really put the pedal down scoring the next 10 shots to lead 23-3 after 14 ends. Jill scored the next shot however Matt had all the answers winning 25-4, that set up the final next week with defending champion Nodsa Johnstone playing the young buck Matthew Seymour. The remaining semi-final of the b grade was also played with June Webb playing Mark Bowcock. After 8 ends the scores were level 7-7. June then led 12-10 after 14 ends. Mark then scored 5-2 to lead 15-14 after 18 ends. She then got on a run scoring 7-1 to lead 21-15 after 22 ends. By end 26 June still led 24-18. Mark then scored the next 3 shots to trail 21-24. It was June who scored the next 3 shots to win 27-21 to set up a final next week against Pat Collins. On Sunday the club played its president’s day. There were 14 sides and 14 million flies competing in good conditions. Sides competing were West Wyalong S&C x3, West Wyalong town, Coolamon, Ungarie, Barmedman, Ardlethan, Weethalle, Temora Bowling and Recreation Club, Ariah Park x3. Thanks to a combined side from Ariah Park and West Wyalong S&C who made up a side at the last minute. There were 2 games of 14 ends played. Game 1 results were Coolamon def Barmedman 18-13. Ardlethan defeated combined side 19-8. Trevor Rees defeated Ray McKenzie 15-14. Alan Schirma defeated Weethalle 15-10. Temora Bowling and Recreation Club defeated West Wyalong town 19-15. Washa Armstrong defeated Jill Johnstone 14-7. Mick Seymour defeated Ungarie 15-7. The leaders after the first game saw Ardlethan on +11 in second Mick Seymour on +8 and third Washa Armstrong on +7 with lunch not doing sides much good. The second game results were Temora defeated Ray McKenzie 15-12. Weethalle defeated Trevor Rees 16-13. Allan Schirma defeated Mick Seymour 18-8 Ungarie defeated Jill Johnstone 19-9. Coolamon defeated Combined side 12-9. Barmedman defeated Washa Armstrong 16-6. Ardlethan defeated West Wyalong town 15-10. This left 4 two game winners with second and third places decided on a count back. In third place was Allan Schirmer, Lorraine Williams and Pudd Fuller from West Wyalong S&C. In second place it was Darryl Gunstan, Andie Stewart and Ian Harrison from Barmedman while the winners were Willy Rees, Eamon Jarrot and Jamie Massey from Ardlethan. With the finals of the singles to be played next week, the draw has been done for the pairs and to be commenced the week after. Coolamon Golf It was a day out for the Hilton sisters on Sunday when they produced a family quinella to smash the Stableford competition. Jackie’s 40 points showcasing her classical fluid swing, like ribbons dancing in the breeze, was blown away when her sibling Andrea showcasing her raw brutal power smashed her was to a brilliant 44 points to obliterate the field. Alas one week too late. Way back in third place was Lachie Higman with Dan Milne, Nick Buck and Earwig Broadhurst filling out the prize rundown. Earwig was the one bright shining light for the family, as his sire Grub was the proud recipient of the pink ball besting Deckie Johnson in a competitive race to the bottom. Squeaker McKelvie won the raffle prize while the jackpot was again unclaimed. Novelty prizes were won by Sandra, Andy, Daniel, Squeak and Raymond Jennings. Golfers were shocked to hear about the break-in to the groundsman’s shed and the theft of several recently purchased garden tools including a chainsaw and several whipper snippers. As the work on the course is done completely by volunteers ensuring townsfolk have a well-tended course to play on, this is a disgusting act. These low life, pond dwelling, evil smelling scum suckers should have two parts of their bodies removed ensuring they can never reproduce. It’s a sad world when the vulnerable along with volunteers are targeted for scams or violence. This weekend we have Stableford events both days and the following weekend the town is hosting the NSW Sandgreen championship for women. If we can squeeze in a little rain before the big weekend, the course should be magnificent. Temora Bowling Club Bowls There is one deferred match still to be played in the 5-a-side Championship with Team Mouawad to play Team Krause who have a mathematical chance of leap-frogging Team McKinnon into 2nd place on the Section A ladder. However, one small slip-up and they’re gone. Team McKinnon hold on to 2nd place with 15pts while Team Krause hold down 4th place on 8.5pts. In order for Team Krause to somehow sneak into the Semis they will need to score a maximum of 7pts available if they can win the Pairs, Triples and Fours. One drawn game in any of those three disciplines will see Team McKinnon hold onto a Semi-Final meeting with Section B winners, Team Cole while Team New are locked in to play Section B runner up Team Stimson. What’s Next There is still plenty of lawn bowls coming up over the next couple of months. This weekend in Holbrook will see the annual Bing Wallder Shield where our Club has 11 or 12 players involved depending upon late withdrawals. The Bing Wallder is historically the competition any player aspires to be involved in because the standard of play is very high. It’s a bit disappointing so many of our area’s “better players” are not attending or are actually playing for other Regions at the same event. That last statement does not take aim at those players currently involved in this year’s event. For those players taking part in their first Bing Wallder, they are going to see a huge step up in class in all positions. It will be an eye-opener and a great opportunity to watch how some of the Riverina-Murray stars manage the way they get through a game. Still, we head off to Holbrook to take on Wagga, Riverina, Albury, Southern Highlands and South West over two days. Nothing is better than toppling these guys at The Bing Wallder. Good bowling to all concerned The following weekend the Temora Bowling Club host the Women’s version of the Big Wallder. The Riverina-Murray Shield we be held on the 17th & 18th of October and this event is just as keenly contested as the Men’s version. This year’s squad is heavily occupied by players from Lake Cargelligo and West Wyalong and rightly so. These ladies are genuinely great players and anybody remotely interested in lawn bowls should get to the Club on this weekend to cheer on our local women. You will see quality lawn bowls being played. Spring Night Bowls This season, the SNB will kick off on Thursday the 29th of October and runs for 8 weeks. All matches kick off at 6pm with the intention of being off the green at 8pm to enable players to either order a meal from the Bistro or grab some tickets in the Club Raffle. Get your teams together and contact the Club on (02) 6977 1236 or ring the Match Committee on 0423 121 358. AGM The Club will be holding their annual AGM on Tuesday the 13th commencing at 6pm. We invite all our members to come along and have a say or listen quietly to how our administration has been going over the last 12 months or so.
