The Temora Kangaroos Australian football seniors’ team notched a fifth win of the season last Saturday to jump to second on the Farrer League ladder. The Kangaroos 10.11 (71) defeated the CSU Bushpigs 3.3 (21) in their home game at Nixon Park. The opening quarter was evenly matched, with the Kangaroos finding goals hard to come by, but they still managed to open up a nine-point lead. The halftime lead was more comfortable as the Kangaroos booted three goals and two behinds in the second quarter, while restricting the Bushpigs to kicking a single goal. Coming out after the restart with a handy 23-point lead, the boys in blue and white produced their most productive quarter, kicking four goals and two behinds to take a six-goal lead into the final quarter. Restricting the Bushpigs to kicking a single behind in the final stanza, the Kangaroos extended the winning margin to 50 points to secure the win. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included Riley Hubbard (4) and one each from Lachlan Leary, Zac Oliver, Robert Krause, Jack Cullen, Abraham Wooden and Liam Sinclair. Their best players were Joseph Morton, Liam Sinclair, Lachlan Leary, Blake Basham, Dean Ross and Wilson Morshead. Meanwhile, the Kangaroos’ reserves 3.4 (22) lost against the Bushpigs 13.10 (88) by 66 points. The reserves were still in the game at the end of the opening quarter, trailing by just 14 points, but they failed to add to their tally in the second quarter, while the Bushpigs were ruthless, kicking four goals and three behinds to open up a 41-point lead at the main break. The Kangaroos outscored their opponents by seven points after the restart by the end of the third quarter, but the damage was already done with too large a lead to claw back. A total of three behinds for the Kangaroos in the final quarter sealed their fate as the Bushpigs went on to kick another five goals and five behinds to blow out the scoreline. The reserves’ goal kickers included one each for Samuel Connolly Nate Breust and Nathan Stimson. Their best players were Matthew Krause, Nathan Stimson, Harvey Holt, Thomas Mattner, Nate Breust and Will Smith. The Under 18.5s Kangaroos 27.17 (179) recorded a thumping win against the Marrar Bombers 5.4 (34) by 145 points. Looking at the final score, most people would be surprised to realise that the teenage Kangaroos actually trailed by five points at the end of the first quarter. However, the following quarter was a stark contrast to the Kangaroos’ performance in the opening quarter as they restricted the Bushpigs to kicking just a single behind and surged away to open up a handy 47-point lead after booting eight goals and five behinds. After the restart, the Kangaroos were even better in defence, holding the Bushpigs scoreless in the third quarter, while piling on another 11 goals and five behinds themselves to take an unassailable 118-point lead into the final quarter. With the result in the bag, the Kangaroos had the luxury and freedom to add another 33 points to their tally and add to the Bushpigs’ woes. The teenage Kangaroos’ goal kickers included Nate Breust (7), Patrick Bryant (6), Thomas Mattner (3), Daylen Coleman (3), Jonte Reid (3), Lachlan Blackwell (2), Corey Robinson (2) and one for Jacob Durham. Their best players included Charlie Watson, Thomas Mattner, Jonte Reid, Daylen Coleman, Liam Drum and Nate Breust. The competition will have a general bye on Saturday due to the June long weekend.
