Can Assist demand rises in Temora

An increase in demand for the services of Can Assist Temora over the past 12 months was outlined at the Annual Branch Meeting. In her annual report President Lynn Hegarty said the first six months of 2026 in particular had seen a rise in the number of district people seeking the branch’s assistance following a cancer diagnosis. Mrs Hegarty said the continued generous support of the community was crucial in enabling Can Assist to provide financial assistance for costs associated with cancer treatment. “Once again we are most appreciative of the support our community has shown,” she said. In her review of the past year treasurer, Jo Hargrave, also highlighted the increase in assistance the branch had distributed, a total of $47,321. “Expenses reflect the practical, direct support we provide clients,” she said. More than 600 fuel vouchers totalling over $15,000 were provided to help cancer patients travel to medical appointments; other costs included medical and pharmacy expenses, and over $5500 towards accommodation at Lilier Lodge in Wagga Wagga. Overall assistance was provided to 58 district people. Fundraising and community support are vital in the branch continuing to provide this service. Mrs Hargrave said contributions from individuals, community groups and corporate supporters make an enormous difference, “we extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredibly supportive community.” The efforts of branch members and the fundraising team was also outstanding with funds raised including from regular raffles and annual street stall. All contributions stay local to help local people. “Commitment, generosity and teamwork ensure that no one in our community faces cancer alone.” Mrs Hegarty said a number of community events had generously directed funds towards Can Assist. A major boost was a $25,000 donation from the Ribbon Run group, who were thanked for their continued dedication and hard work. “To all groups and individuals who have given generously I extend our branch’s sincere appreciation.” This includes service clubs, sporting clubs, businesses, schools, and other community groups and residents. Mrs Hegarty thanked members for their outstanding volunteer efforts in fundraising and awareness activities. Members also operate the Can Assist office in the Community Centre, offering a professional and confidential environment. She gave special thanks to the executive committee for their support and dedication. She also highlighted the important role of the branch’s men’s and women’s support groups, who meet monthly, and thanked the coordinators for their efforts. Temora Shire Council mayor Rick Firman thanked the branch for its continued commitment to the community. “It is phenomenal work you do to help our own,” Cr Firman said. “On behalf of the community I thank branch members and all who support Can Assist.” Cr Firman chaired the election of office bearers. The executive was re-elected including Mrs Hegarty, vice president, Karen Baldwin, treasurer Mrs Hargrave; secretary, Liz Grant and assistant secretary/treasurer, Alana Aurik. Continuing as welfare officers are Heather New, Narelle Crawford and Jenny McKelvie; raffle coordinators, Ollie Wallace and Jan Oliver; women’s support group coordinators, Heather Stimson and Helen Maxwell; men’s support group coordinator, Ken Hewett; catering coordinators, Mavis Cassidy and Jenny Combe. General meetings of Can Assist are held on the second Monday of every second month (from February) at 7pm at the Bundawarrah Centre. All are welcome. The Can Assist office is open in the Community Centre 10am-12pm Tuesdays and Fridays. Annual membership is $10 which can be paid at the office or enquire regarding direct deposit, all support is appreciated.
