Barmedman News Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Ian Belfield Clay late of Adina Care Home Cootamundra and formally of Barmedman who passed away on September 25th at the age of 91 years. Ian is survived by his sisters Barbara Lawler and Cheryl Martin and was pre-deceased by his sisters and brothers Grace, Colin, Joan and Douglas. As per Ian’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place. *** As from the 1st October, Fire Permits are now required to light any fire in the open. Apply online or contact your local Fire Brigade to obtain a permit. *** The Council Community Forum is being held on Thursday 29th October at the Community Hall commencing at 6.30pm The Forums are an opportunity for the community to voice their concerns or ideas for the betterment of the town and district and everyone is welcome to attend. Submissions need to be emailed or posted to Council by the 22nd October to be included in the agenda. *** An exciting time for former Barmedman resident Francis Stewart with the weddings of grandsons James, son of Andrew and Michele; Matt, son of Graeme and Sheree taking place recently. Coolamon News A noted Ganmain identity and respected community figure, Mr Len Brill celebrated a remarkable milestone last week marking his 100th birthday. A lifelong contributor to local sport, Len is widely recognised for his dedication to the Ganmain Football Club, where his leadership and volunteer service helped strengthen the town’s enduring sporting culture. His community involvement also extended to events such as the Ganmain Uniting Church centenary, where he took part in commemorative activities. Len’s commitment, generosity and influence across generations have made him a cherished local identity, with residents paying tribute to a man whose example continues to inspire. *** Coolamon residents will have the chance to explore some of the district’s most picturesque private gardens when Rotary Coolamon hosts its Garden Viewing event on Sunday 18 October 2026. The self‑guided experience will run from 10am to 4pm, with six gardens included on the route. Participants will register at the Allawah Community Centre, 6 Dr Buchanan Drive, before setting out to enjoy a day of colour, creativity and local horticultural talent. Morning and afternoon tea will be available at the Centre for $8 per person. Entry prices are set at $20 for adults, $15 for concession holders and $35 for families. A successful event with impressive performances across all divisions. *** Coolamon Shire Council reminds Canola Trail visitors not to trespass on working farms or enter canola paddocks for photos. These are private properties and unauthorised access poses safety risks and disrupts operations. Landowners can collect free “No Trespassing” signs from the Coolamon Shire Library to help deter unwanted entry. Council encourages all visitors to enjoy the stunning views from designated areas and respect the rights of local farmers. *** “OneStep Max”, the mental‑health advocate walking across Australia to highlight suicide prevention, spent the past week in the Coolamon Shire meeting Mayor David McCann and many community members. His Walk to Save a Life campaign promotes connection, kindness and early intervention, with each kilometre symbolising lives lost to suicide. Over the years, nominees have come from a diverse cross section of our community, so your nomination is important. Details of how to nominate will be provided by Council in the near future, but that should not stop you from putting some notes on paper in readiness for the official nomination period. *** Renowned Wagga author and historian, Sherry Morris paid a visit to the Coolamon Shire Library last week and was please to find one of her books among the collection. *** News from the Coolamon Shire Library this week includes: Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day celebrates the special role grandparents play in our lives. The Library will host a fun-filled morning of activities on Friday, 23 October at 10.30am, including a Storytime session , outdoor games, puzzles and craft. Grandparents will also receive a special goodies pack to take home. Children’s Week. The Library will celebrate Children’s Week from Monday, 26 October to Friday, 30 October. A “Hand of Friendship” display tree will be placed in the Library to celebrate children in our community. Children are invited to colour in a handprint, which will then be added to the display. Baby Bounce. Baby Bounce will be held on Wednesday 28th October @ 10.30am. Baby Bounce is a 30-minute early literacy program designed to help very young children to explore language. Older siblings are most welcome – morning tea will be provided. Storytime. Our next Storytime will be held 16th October theme – “trains” @ 10.30am. Storytime is not held during the holidays. Coolamon From Our Past From Our Past this week returns to the pages of the Coolamon–Ganmain Farmers Review, where the rhythm of district life in 1926 unfolds through small but telling moments of community endeavour. The stories range from essay competitions held to mark the visit of the Great White Train, to the well‑attended Tooyal carnival whose proceeds supported both hospital and hall. They capture scenes of civic and church life, spirited sporting contests, local fundraising efforts, and even the occasional mishap — reminders that everyday triumphs and trials were woven tightly into the fabric of the district. Taken together, these glimpses reveal a community busy, generous and resilient, much like the one we know today. *** ‘…The Australia-made Preference League conducted an essay competition in connection with the visit of the "Great White Train" to Coolamon and Ganmain. The essays have now been judged, the successful competitors being Miss Joan Browngedge, public school, Ganmain, and Miss Dulcie Maynard, convent school, Coolamon. *** On Wednesday last the annual Tooyal carnival was brought off on the recreation ground, 75 per cent, of the proceeds going to the Wagga Hospital and 25 per cent, to the Tooyal Hall fund. Despite the rain on the previous day, which made the roads bad, there was a very good attendance. A varied and interesting programme was run through during the day and kept the spectators well entertained. Mr. E. Lindner, as president, and Mr. L. C. Dyce (secretary) worked hard to ensure the success of the carnival. *** At St. Brendan's Church, Ganmain, on Sunday last, His Lordship, Dr. Dwyer, Bishop of Wagga, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to a large number of candidates. He also blessed the beautiful stained glass windows, recently erected. *** The final of the School of Arts billiard tournament was played on Tuesday night between A. C. Bright (30 bhd) and N. G. Howes (receives 30). The result was a win for the latter by 61 (150—89). *** The amount so far in hand for the Coolamon Cancer Research Fund totals £50 odd, and further donations are earnestly solicited. The sum aimed at is £250 and this amount should easily be accomplished. *** Mr. P. Bradley was the only local farmer to represent the district at the Parkes educational tour. *** The rainfall registered in Coolamon last week amounted to 78 points. Rain and high winds have caused much anxiety to farmers. *** In the opening competition cricket match on Sunday Coolamon, 8 wickets for 195 (declared), defeated Tooyal, who made 80, by 115 runs. *** Mr. E. H. Furner of Coolamon, after visiting his young son who is in hospital at Wagga on Sunday, met with a painful accident as the result of which he now has two broken ribs and a splintered shin. Mr Furner was fixing up his car preparatory to starting for home when he fell into a pit at the garage. *** The vital statistics for the Coolamon and Ganmain district for the quarter ended September 30, was as follows:- Births, 9 males and 13 females; deaths, 4 males and 2 females. There were 11 marriages. *** Master W. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Smith, met with a mishap this week which proves that the toy air rifle, so popular amongst some of the boys in town, is a dangerous weapon. He was playing with companions when he was hit on the lip with a pellet from an air rifle. Dr. Buchanan had to extract the pellet under a local anaesthetic, and then stich the lip. *** The period of grace for dog registrations terminates on October 14th. Then It may be that local dog-owners will make further and additional contributions to consolidated revenue through the medium of the police court. *** Owing to the increase In the telephone exchange work at Coolamon the postal department has found it necessary to appoint two permanent telephonists. An examination was held last month, which resulted in the appointment of Miss Dorothy Skates of Coolamon, and Miss Merie Charnock, of Woodstock, the latter securing a very high pass. The telephone traffic at Coolamon is now very heavy. Subscribers are reminded that it is necessary to give the number required, and not the name of the subscriber wanted when ringing up. This is essential at any time, but especially so with new telephonists, as It is impossible to memorise every subscriber’s number. The correct procedure in this respect frequently saves the calling subscriber time in waiting until the telephonist is able to look up the number, and also congestion at the exchange…’
