Hoskins Street is one of Temora's busiest traffic corridors, carrying a steady mix of local traffic, heavy vehicles and freight movements throughout the day. With shops, businesses and services attracting regular pedestrian activity, everyone has a role to play in keeping this busy precinct safe. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the designated pedestrian crossings and refuge islands provided along Hoskins Street rather than crossing between vehicles or attempting to jaywalk. While it may seem quicker, crossing unexpectedly in busy traffic significantly increases the risk of serious injury, particularly where heavy trucks require much longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles. Council Road safety Officer, Mr Steven Bloomfield advises pedestrians to cross only at designated crossing points where available, remain alert, avoid distractions such as mobile phones, and never assume an approaching driver has seen them. Using pedestrian refuges allows the road to be crossed safely in stages and reduces exposure to moving traffic. Motorists also have an important responsibility. Drivers should remain vigilant for pedestrians, particularly near shopping areas and intersections, adjust their speed to suit the conditions, and be prepared to stop safely when pedestrians are using crossings. Heavy vehicle drivers should be especially mindful that pedestrian activity can increase throughout the business district.
