PRRRAC pushes regional priorities

The work of the NSW Premier’s Remote, Rural and Regional Advisory Council (PRRRAC) continues, with Members meeting in Parliament House, last Thursday and Friday 24 and 25 September. Temora Shire Council mayor Rick Firman is the co-chairman of the PRRRAC, alongside NSW Premier, Chris Minns MP. The advisory body was formed 12 months ago, and draws state leaders from remote, rural and regional peak bodies including the Local Land Services, local government, charities, NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Country Women’s Association, NSW Farmers, tourism bodies and the business community. Meeting three times a year the council facilitates collaboration between the NSW Premier, the Minister for Regional NSW and key regional stakeholder groups across NSW and provide strategic advice and advocacy on matters affecting regional, rural and remote communities in NSW. All members are purely voluntary receiving no renumeration for their services, with representatives dedicated to positive results for communities outside large metropolitan areas. One of the important reports presented at last weeks meetings was a housing paper with a working party established with Jane Laverty (NSW Regional Business Council) as the Lead. Issues have been considered by the working party, together with a suite of recommendations to tackle to critical issue. Mayor Firman and Mrs Laverty formally presented the final housing report and recommendations to Premier Minns on Friday, 25 September, in the Premier’s Parliament House Board room. At the May meeting a report and recommendations by the Drought and Water Working Party was handed to the Premier on how these issues can be addressed. The Working Party was chaired by Dr Richard Colbran PhD (CEO of NSW Rural Doctors Network) and the Premiers Office is currently working on a response. Both of these reports will be publicly released in the coming weeks. The PRRRAC will continue to meet ‘Out of Session’, with the Premier inviting the PRRRAC members to continue their work, until after the election. The Premier has indicated the PRRRAC would continue, should his government be re-elected. Mayor Firman said the council has been in effect for 12 months. “There have three formal meetings with the Premier and two papers have been presented,” he said. “The PRRRAC have worked very hard to ensure we prove our worth to the Premier. “We look forward to our report and recommendations being seriously considered and hopefully, adopted. “The PRRRAC Members are all grateful for this rare opportunity to provide advice to our Premier on all things remote, rural and regional.
