The RFS is reminding all Bland and Temora Shire residents to always call Triple Zero (000) first in an emergency. Superintendent Mick Gore of the Bland Temora District said that there have been several instances where people called Fire Control Centres, brigade stations or even firefighters’ personal mobiles to report a fire. “This can lead to delays in emergency services arriving at an incident, unnecessarily putting lives at risk” Superintendent Gore said. “Triple Zero is the first number people should call during an emergency situation.” “By calling Triple Zero immediately, the most appropriate emergency resources can be deployed without delay.” Superintendent Gore said Triple Zero operators will ask callers whether they require Police, Fire or Ambulance. “People calling Triple Zero should describe the situation and provide an accurate location, including cross streets or landmarks where possible, to help emergency crews locate the incident scene quickly,” Superintendent Gore said. “People living on rural properties should provide additional location information, including rural numbering information and distances from crossroads. “Parents should make sure their children know to dial Triple Zero in an emergency and ensure they can give the operator their correct address.” Superintendent Gore said people who do not speak English or have hearing or speech impediments can also contact emergency services. “Residents with hearing or speech impairments should call the one-zero-six (106) text-based emergency call service using a text phone.” “In an emergency, time matters. A few minutes can save lives. Don’t assume someone else has called triple zero, even if you aren’t the first, you may have vital new information for emergency responders” Rural Fire Service
