Coolamon Central School captain Lawson Buchegger was rewarded for his incredible performance at the 2026 NSW Combined High Schools Cross Country Championships with a podium placing last week. Competing in the 18 Years Boys event at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre in Horsley Park, Lawson finished 13th overall in a field of 88 runners, but won his bronze medal for finishing third in the Government Schools division. He completed the demanding 8km course, renowned for its challenging hills, in 26 minutes and 33 seconds, averaging a pace of 3:19 minutes per kilometre. Coolamon Central School praised the teenage runner for turning his performance into a podium finish through dedication and determination over the past 12 months. “What makes this achievement even more impressive is the journey behind it,” the school said. “Just 12 months ago, Lawson finished 20th at the State Championships. “Through unwavering commitment, consistency and determination, he has turned that result into a place on the podium.” The school said Lawson’s bronze medal win had reflected months of disciplined preparation, “early mornings, hard sessions and the resilience to keep improving day after day”. Lawson’s achievement has also been recognised as an example to other students, with the school praising his commitment. “His work ethic and dedication are second to none and this result is thoroughly deserved,” the school said. “Lawson is a fantastic role model for our school and community, showing what can be achieved through persistence and a willingness to put in the work.”
