The Temora Kangaroos Australian football seniors’ team has secured third place on the Farrer League ladder despite a loss against the CSU Bushpigs last Saturday. The Kangaroos 7.7 (49) lost against the Bushpigs 17.10 (112) in the final round of the regular competition in their away game at Peter Hastie Oval. A slow start, kicking a single goal and two behinds in the opening quarter, resulted in the Kangaroos chasing the game, trailing by 20 points heading into the second quarter. The Kangaroos added four goals and two behinds in the second quarter, but fell slightly further behind as the Bushpigs went to the main break with a handy 23-point lead. After the restart, the Kangaroos could only add one goal and a single behind as the Bushpigs added five goals and two behinds to take an eight-goal lead into the final quarter. The Bushpigs eventually went on to win by 63 points in a victory that saw them leapfrog the Kangaroos into second place on the ladder. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included Lachlan Leary (2), Lachlan Robertson (2) and one each for Will Ford, Riley Hubbard and Wilson Morsehead. Their best players were Blake Basham, Joseph Morton, Riley Hubbard, Lachlan Leary, Wilson Morshead and Dean Ross. Meanwhile, the Kangaroos reserves 9.6 (60) also lost against the Bushpigs 11.10 (76). The Kangaroos finished in fifth place on the ladder with nine wins for the season. Both teams were evenly matched in the opening quarter, with the Bushpigs producing a slightly better performance to take a seven-point lead into the following quarter. However, the Kangaroos proved to be the dominant force in the second quarter, kicking three goals and two behinds, while restricting the Bushpigs to a single goal and three behinds, to take a one-goal halftime lead. After the restart, points were hard to come by in a low-scoring third quarter, with both teams kicking a single goal and three behinds to retain a six-point lead for the Kangaroos with the final quarter remaining. The Bushpigs rallied in the fourth quarter to eventually record a comeback win by 16 points. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included Liam Pattison (3), Nate Breust (2) and one each for Nick Holt, Harvey Holt, Eden Breust and Lachlan Blackwell. Their best players were Nate Breust, Nick Holt, Rob Grant, Jackson Macauley, Nic McRae and Rhys Terry. The Under 18.5s Kangaroos 6.10 (46) lost against the Northern Jets 16.9 (105) at Ariah Park Recreation Reserve. The teenage Kangaroos finished in fourth place on the ladder with six wins for the season. The Jets raced away to a 28-point lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the pressure in the following stanza to go into the main break leading by 32 points. With one quarter left to play, the Kangaroos trailed by 34 points, but the scoreline blew out in the fourth quarter when the Jets added another four goals and four behinds, while the Kangaroos could only muster three behinds. In the first round of the finals series, the senior Kangaroos will renew rivalries with the Bushpigs in a Qualifying Final at the Coleambally Sports Grounds at 2.15pm on Saturday. The reserves will face the East Wagga Kooringal Hawks in an Elimination Final at Maher Oval, Wagga, the following day on Sunday at 12.10pm. The Under 18.5s will also play at Maher Oval on Sunday, taking on the Marrar Bombers at 10am in an Elimination Final.
