$10,000 reward still on offer for cemetery vandals

Next week, on September 18, marks the sombre 16th anniversary of a senseless act of vandalism at the Temora Cemetery, which caused severe damage. The damage bill was estimated to be about $100,000 at the time, but the cost of the evil deed inflicted on the community took a much higher emotional toll. The appalling attack is still at the forefront of the minds of many locals who were haunted by the devastation they witnessed from a crime that left a lasting scar on the local community. Soon after the crime, the community’s anger and grief manifested itself through a Facebook page, “Publicly humiliate the vandals of Temora Cemetery”. The page highlighted the community’s disgust and bewilderment at the actions of the cemetery vandals. Temora Shire Mayor Rick Firman said at the time that he witnessed more than 50 graves that were desecrated, with the headstones smashed on that particular day in 2010. Mayor Firman, who was the Acting Mayor during the time, described the attack as “sickening, disappointing, blatant, evil vandalism” and nothing has changed to alter his opinion. Although no charges have been laid and no arrests made in relation to one of the most disturbing crimes in the town’s history, the search for leads and the appeal for information to help find answers have been ongoing. Mayor Firman said the council’s $10,000 reward for anyone who can provide information that leads to a conviction for the unsolved crime, is still in place. He said he was grateful police had not given up on solving the case. “I would say that we know there are those who know what happened and who were involved with the cemetery desecration,” Mayor Firman said. “We will never forget that evil act and the council continue to encourage anyone with any information to please do the right thing and report it to the police. “Council is grateful that Superintendent Andrew Spliet and his team still have this as an open case. “One day we will see the culprit (or culprits) brought to justice.” Anyone who might have information about the incident is urged to come forward.
