New chapter for TBEG

The Temora Business Enterprise Group (TBEG) has announced changes to their operating model following a period of consultation focused on the organisation’s future. This follows the Future Direction Survey undertaken earlier this year to better understand what local businesses wanted from TBEG and whether there remained a role for the organisation. Recently re-elected chair of the organisation, David Renehan said that the message from the survey was clear, 75 per cent of respondents believed Temora still needs an active business group, but there was also strong support for doing things differently and the organisation had listened to that feedback. “TBEG has been part of Temora’s business community for many years, and the survey told us there is still strong support for having an organisation that brings businesses together and promotes our local economy,” Mr Renehan said. “But we also need to be realistic about the environment we operate in. “Small business owners are incredibly busy. “Asking them to run their businesses, employ people, support their families and then commit significant amounts of time to a volunteer organisation is becoming increasingly difficult. “Rather than asking a small number of volunteers to keep doing more, we’ve decided to simplify TBEG and concentrate our resources on the things that provide the greatest value.” Businesses particularly identified promotion of local businesses, networking and practical support as priorities, while calling for an organisation that was more business led, inclusive, visible and focused on delivering value. As part of the reset, TBEG membership has been reduced to just $20 per business, per year, regardless of business size. Mr Renehan said that TBEG’s participation in the Business NSW Association Alliance Program means TBEG members can access a substantial range of business resources and support through Business NSW. “For $20 a year, we think that represents exceptional value before you even consider the local benefits of being part of TBEG,” Mr Renehan said. “Our challenge now is to make sure local businesses know those benefits exist and can make use of them.” At its recent Annual General Meeting, TBEG welcomed new and continuing members to its executive, providing the organisation with the people needed to continue while recognising the very real time pressures facing local business owners. David Renehan continues as chair, with Brooke Bremer elected treasurer. Nicola Curry, Shontayne Ward and Rob Matthews have joined the executive committee, while Jo Reid has taken on the volunteer secretary role. There will be a continuation of the popular Temora Business Awards and they will continue as an annual event and remain one of TBEG’s signature activities. TBEG will also retain the capacity to advocate for local businesses, pursue grant funded opportunities, support the TBUCK$ Shop Local Gift Card Program and consider other initiatives where there is sufficient interest and capacity. The organisation has said that the new operating model is deliberately flexible. TBEG will maintain its governance, membership, advocacy and key initiatives while keeping its costs and volunteer workload low. As more businesses become involved and new volunteers emerge, the executive hopes activities can progressively grow again. “The door is absolutely open,” Mr Renehan said. “This isn’t about winding TBEG down. It’s about making sure there is still a TBEG here to build on in the future. “The survey told us businesses want an active business organisation, but they also want something that delivers practical value. We now have an opportunity to rebuild around that. “For $20, we’d encourage every business in Temora Shire to become a member. But just as importantly, if there’s something you think TBEG should be doing, don’t just tell us, come and help us make it happen. “The future of TBEG will ultimately be shaped by the businesses it exists to represent.” Businesses wishing to join or renew their membership can find membership information through the TBEG website. https://www.tbeg.org.au
