The annual Country Hope Camp is returning, and they are looking for volunteers to staff the weeklong retreat for children with cancer or life-threatening illnesses and their siblings that gets under way on 27 September at Wagga. As preparations for the 21st camp are well underway organisers are encouraging people, especially men, to act as camp buddies that can bring fun, friendship and unforgettable memories to the local kid’s hat attend the camp. According to the charity, buddies have a special role, as they're paired one-on-one with a child for the week, providing friendship, support and encouragement every step of the way and it is this relationship that makes the camp special. Country Hope Chief Executive Officer Jo Esler said the ongoing need for volunteers highlights the important role a Camp Buddy plays in helping children feel supported, understood and included throughout the camp experience. A long-time Camp Buddy herself, Mrs Esler said she had witnessed firsthand the difference a dedicated volunteer can make, sharing “being a Camp Buddy is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.” “You see children arrive, some are nervous and unsure, carrying more than their years should have to bear, but over the course of the week they begin to settle, grow in confidence, form friendships and rediscover the simple joy of being kids.” “It doesn’t take special qualifications or experience. It takes kindness, a positive attitude, and a willingness to show up for a child who may need someone in their corner.” Mrs Esler said many volunteers return year after year because of the positive connections formed during camp. “People often sign up thinking they’re giving something back, but they leave having gained just as much themselves. “The impact stays with you long after camp ends.” Prospective volunteers will need to attend a training weekend in Wagga on 25–26 July, where they will learn more about the role and receive the support needed to become a Camp Buddy. Volunteers must be aged 18 years or older. Country Hope Camp is being held from Sunday 27 September to Friday 2 October at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre near Wagga.
