Last Wednesday night, 24 June, the Temora Lions club held its 66th change over dinner at the Temora Bowling Club. The night was also a celebration of the club’s achievements over the last 12 months and an opportunity to express gratitude to members and external organisations that have helped make the year a success for the club. Lion of the year was Ian Preston known affectionately as Stumpy. Past president Anthony Cain was reelected int the role for another 12 months along with much of the previous board. In his report to the club Mr Cain said it had been a very productive year and thanked every volunteer and member for the work had put in. “We recycled 255,000 bottles and cans for the year by taking them to Wagga Wagga,” he said. “Our Return and Earn crew recycled 69,600 by manually feeding them into Return and Earn machine monthly. “The recycling plastics saw 323 shuttles being loaded throughout the year. “Recycling of non-returnable glass saw 94 crates loaded throughout the year. “We processed 491 bales of cardboard, which equates to 245 tonnes, throughout the year. “A job we should be proud of.” In the 2024/25 year the Lions Club donated $35,542 to 13 organisations and on that list are five groups from the local area and surrounds including Temora Can Assist, Temora Families in Need, the Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House and Kurrajong Waratah. The other benefices of the donations are Lions Cord Blood Foundation, Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation, Lions Diabetes Foundation, Lions Save Sight Foundation, Lions Prostate Research and Treatment, Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation, Lions Arthritis Foundation, Lions Spinal Cord Foundation. Mr Cain said it gratifying that the money raised through the recycling center came from outside of Temora and that was then being put into the community. Deputy mayor councillor Greham Sinclair represented Temora Shire Council and said that the efforts the club made with the recycling enterprise have a large impact on the community diverting those recyclables away from landfills and the community benefiting from those cost savings.
