A weekend of flying, fun and community spirit has delivered unforgettable memories for 11 Country Hope families, as Temora Flyers Inc (TFI) celebrated another successful Country Hope Weekend last weekend. Running from 9–11 October a total of 44 participants descended on Temora for three action-packed days, with nine aircraft and an army of volunteer pilots and community members coming together to provide a much-needed break for families affected by childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Despite challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and warm temperatures, the weekend was a tremendous success, it is estimated that more than 60 flights were conducted over Saturday and Sunday. For TFI, months of planning came down to one simple goal — giving Country Hope families a weekend to remember. At the centre of the event were the volunteer pilots who generously donated their aircraft, time and skills to take families flying over Temora and the surrounding countryside. While taking someone for a flight might appear straightforward, the contribution made by these pilots extends well beyond their time in the cockpit. Operating a private aircraft comes at a considerable cost, with pilots personally contributing towards fuel, maintenance and other operating expenses, while also making their aircraft available throughout the weekend. With nine aircraft participating and more than 60 flights conducted, the collective generosity of the pilots represented one of the most significant contributions towards making the weekend possible. Temora Flyers Inc Secretary Rob Matthews said the club could not adequately put a value on the generosity of its pilots. “These pilots aren’t just giving us their time — they’re giving us their aircraft and taking on a significant portion of the cost themselves,” Mr Matthews said. “They turn up because they want to give these families an experience they might not otherwise have, and seeing the reaction of the kids when they come back from a flight makes it all worthwhile. “Without our volunteer pilots, this weekend simply wouldn’t be possible.” Support from Aero Refuellers enabled Temora Flyers Inc to provide some assistance towards fuel costs, although the pilots themselves continued to shoulder much of the expense associated with flying. For some participants, the weekend provided their first opportunity to experience flight in a light aircraft, for others, one flight simply wasn’t enough, with eager passengers returning for another chance to see Temora from above. While the aircraft were busy overhead, there was no shortage of entertainment back on the ground. Samantha Jordan from KidzHit kept the children active and entertained throughout Saturday with a range of games and sporting activities, ensuring there were plenty of tired but happy children by the end of the day. Sarah from Canola Kids provided an opportunity for the children to explore their creative side through arts and crafts. Members of the Thanowring Rural Fire Brigade also joined the festivities, bringing along a fire truck for the children to explore and providing another highlight of the weekend. Families were treated to tours and simulator experiences at the Temora Aviation Museum, while the TFI Tech program gave young participants an opportunity to get hands-on with aviation and learn more about aircraft construction. Of course, keeping 44 participants, along with pilots and volunteers, fed throughout the weekend was no small undertaking. Noel and Brenda from Flavors of the Heart generously catered the Friday and Saturday evening meals, bringing everyone together to share stories, reflect on the day’s adventures and enjoy some well-earned downtime. Temora Rotary also contributed to the weekend by providing breakfast, ensuring families and volunteers were well prepared for another busy day. Volunteers spent countless hours preparing facilities, coordinating activities, assisting with flying operations, preparing and serving meals, welcoming families and eventually packing everything away on Sunday. Local businesses, organisations and individuals also rallied behind the event, contributing financial support, goods, services and their time. Temora Flyers Inc extends its sincere appreciation to Benn and Sharon Connell, Hazair, Aero Refuellers, Temora Bowling Club, Alison and Edmond, Ian and Anne Gunn, Temora Capital Chemist, Blue Frog Optics, Edens Engineering, MGS Accounting, Auswild and Broad, Dr Lehmann, Temora Medical Complex, Temora Ex-Services Club, CRW Law, Fritsch Bros, Temora Independent, Temora Rotary, Temora Lions Club and Temora Aviation Museum. The club also acknowledged the many individuals who contributed quietly behind the scenes, helping ensure the weekend ran smoothly. Mr Matthews said the event demonstrated the extraordinary generosity that exists within the Temora community. “You spend months planning something like this, and there are certainly plenty of moving parts, but when the weekend finally arrives and you see it all come together, it’s incredibly rewarding,” he said. “We had pilots flying, volunteers cooking and serving meals, local businesses supporting us and children running around having an amazing time. “That’s when you realise just how many people have contributed to making something like this possible. “Temora is incredibly fortunate to have the aviation community we do, but this weekend really showed that the generosity extends well beyond aviation. The wider community got behind these families, and that’s something we should all be proud of.” By Sunday morning, the final flights had been completed, the aircraft were returning to their hangars and families began preparing for their journeys home. After three days of flying, activities, laughter and friendship, another Country Hope Weekend had drawn to a close. The figures tell an impressive story — 11 families, 44 participants, nine aircraft and more than 60 flights. But for Temora Flyers Inc, the true measure of success was found in the smiles on children’s faces, the excitement of passengers returning from their flights and the opportunity for families to enjoy a weekend away from the challenges of everyday life. “At the end of the day, that’s what this weekend is all about,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s about giving these families an opportunity to make some wonderful memories, enjoy themselves and, even if just for a few days, put some of their everyday worries aside. “To our sponsors, volunteers and the wider community, thank you. Your generosity makes weekends like this possible. “To our pilots, we simply couldn’t do it without you. “And most importantly, to the Country Hope families who trusted us with their weekend — thank you for coming to Temora and allowing us to share it with you. We hope you went home with some very special memories.” Temora Flyers Inc hopes the Country Hope Weekend will continue to be a treasured tradition, bringing together aviation, community generosity and families for many years to come.
