The Temora Kangaroos Australian football seniors’ team is in a three-way tie for third place on the Farrer League ladder following a 16-point defeat against The Rock Yerong Creek Magpies last Saturday. The Kangaroos 8.9 (57) lost against the Magpies 11.7 (73) in their Farrer League home game at Nixon Park. At the end of a tight opening quarter, the Kangaroos took a single-point lead, but the Magpies hit back to take a 10-point lead heading into the main break. After the restart proved to be another close quarter, with just two goals separating the teams in the Magpies’ favour, with one quarter left to play. In another low-scoring quarter, the Magpies held on to hand the Kangaroos their sixth loss of the season. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included James Godde (2) and one each for Joseph Morton, Lachlan Leary, Robert Krause, Harvey Holt, Riley Derrick and Jack Cullen. Their best players were Lachlan Leary, Liam Sinclair, Joseph Morton, Blake Basham, Riley Hubbard and James Godde. Although the Kangaroos lost the game, there was still reason to cheer as Joe Morton marked the milestone of playing his 100th senior game. Morton is another local junior who has come through the ranks of the Kangaroos. He is described as a “true workhorse who never stops, leading by example both on and off the field”. Meanwhile, the reserves 11.5 (71) lost against the Magpies 14.9 (93). The Kangaroos’ most productive period in the game was in the fourth quarter – the only quarter they outscored their opponents, but it was too little, too late, as they tried to claw back a 33-point deficit. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers included Matt Harpley (6) and one each for Jacob Wooden, Tim Shea, Thomas Mattner, Callum Derrick and William Scott. Their best players were Isaac Reardon, Angus Cockfield, Bailey Robinson, Matt Harpley, Jasper Connolly and Tim Shea. The Under 18.5s Kangaroos 14.11 (95) had better fortune, defeating the Magpies 12.6 (78). The teenage Kangaroos started well, racing away to a 16-point lead at the end of the opening quarter. Holding a 15-point lead at halftime, the Kangaroos allowed the Magpies back in the game after the restart. Taking a five-point lead into the final quarter, the Kangaroos then started to dominate, adding five goals and two behinds to win comfortably in the end and cement fourth place on the ladder to ensure a finals berth. The Kangaroos’ goal kickers were Lachlan Blackwell (4), Jonte Reid (2), Nate Breust (2), Leonard Lancaster (2) and one each for Lachlan John Smith, Thomas Mattner, Zeke Gersbach and George Morton. In round 16 on Saturday, the Kangaroos will face away games against Coleambally at the Coleambally Sports Grounds. The bounce-up for the seniors is at 2.10pm, 12.10pm for the reserves and the Under 18.5s will start at 10.20am.
