Temora Bowling Club Bowls Club Championships Minor Pairs Ellis Breust and Wayne Stimson have claimed the 25-26 Minor Pairs Championship with a thrilling 19-17 win over Rob Jordan and Ross McKenzie which was decided on the last end of the match. Breust and Stimson trailed for the vast majority of the match but held their nerve over the last couple of ends to score a great win. Handicap Singles Jake Anderson has claimed the 25-26 Handicap Singles Championship with a dominant 21-10 over Billy Moore last Saturday. Anderson looked threatening during the roll-up practice ends and that form continued throughout the match. It’s a funny game is lawn bowls. On those days when you can “feel” the speed of the green quickly, you are going to play all the different shots confidently and Anderson clearly showed he found the speed of the green early. That’s a great win for young Jake, as Moore had been playing outstanding bowls in the matches prior to the Final. Handicap Pairs Six of the eight Round two matches of the handicap pairs have been completed with Peter Harpley and Jon Wilson putting the cleaners through Beetle Bartel & Bevan Krause 29-15. They now meet Paul Cook and Bill Robertson who accounted for Phil Waterson and Bill Morre 21-16 where the difference in the contest was Paul Cook. Yep. You read that right. Paul Cook. The same guy who isn’t sure whether he’s left-handed or right-handed. Cook played some amazing shots over the last few ends to sink their more fancied rivals. John and Mike Tucker have caused a boil over in defeating John and Jake Anderson 24-16. Unfortunately, the Anderson’s couldn’t break into the six shot start they had to give away as the Tucker’s combined brilliantly to control the match. The result of the John Rayner and Glenn Breust verses Ellis Breust and Wayne Stimson contest are a bit of a mystery. Score cards can’t be located with some members claiming to have watched the match being played. Further investigation is required. Don Martin and Mick Daley got out of jail against Rob Jordan and Ross McKenzie winning 19-17 on the last end in a match they never seriously looked like threatening, until the last couple of ends. They now meet Neville Elwin and Trevor Firman who easily accounted for Dean Walsh and Glen Keane 19-12 in a match were Elwin and Firman always looked comfortable on the scoreboard. Nora and Bruce Saffioti have yet to play Lisa and Wayne Schulz and the winner of this match will play Greg and Rick McKinnon in the quarterfinals after Greg and Rick won a nail-biter over Bert Taylor and Marcel Mouawad 13-12. This really was a crackerjack game. Minor Singles This championship has hit a snag which takes a bit of explaining. Bowls NSW have an “Order of Precedence” which is observed by club’s and administrators each year. The Australian Open, being played on the Gold Coast commencing this week has an Order of Precedence attached to its playing conditions. Therefore, if a player is entered into our club minor singles championship and the Australian Open at the same time, the Australian Open gets precedence over club events. Rob Jordan has entered the Australian Open and he is set to play Don Martin here in Temora at the same time. That means the Championship here in Temora must pause for the time being. The eventual winner of the Jordan-Martin contest will play Glenn Breust with the winner of those games to play Rick McKinnon in the Semi-Finals after McKinnon accounted for Jake Anderson 25-21 in a seriously high quality single match last Sunday. In the bottom half of the draw, Chris Cole meets Bill Moore while Jon Wilson meets Ross McKenzie. Temora Vets: Delta Ag Shield: Stableford Those steak sandwiches after golf last Thursday were perfect. The finely sliced Scotch Fillets were so tender that even the worst cooks couldn't ruin them. We'll do that again soon. Players, keep donating your skins winnings, and we'll have more steaks on the barbecue. Thursday, 4 June, was a miserable day: cold, damp, and windy. Who expected fourteen players to leave their warm lounge rooms? Not me, I thought we would be lucky to get eight players, that’s the minimum number of players we need to have a competition. By 10:45am, six players awaited a decision: play or go home? Five minutes later, eight more arrived. With enough players for the Delta Ag Shield, we started. Mud flew everywhere, but we enjoyed ourselves, doing what we love. Gavin Holt (Wagga) and Ray Jennings (Coolamon) supported our day, demonstrating their enjoyment of playing with the Temora Vets. Ray Jennings (9) won with 38 points. Steve Steinhardt (3) was runner-up with 35 points. Ball winners included: Dave Loftus (6) with 34 points, Judy Gorton (22) with 33 points (thanks to a chip-in for par on the 18th), Gavin Holt (10) with 32 points c/b, and Anthony Abra (17) with 32 points c/b. Neville Elwin (10) also played well, scoring 32 points, but narrowly missed a ball prize. However, with Manly beating Souths in the NRL that night, he'll be smiling until next Thursday. Nearest the Pins: The 3rd hole was unreachable that day. The 7th was different; Steve Steinhardt easily placed his ball 2.37 metres from the hole. Dave Loftus just scraped in for a ball on the 12th with 7.4 metres. Bill Robertson claimed the 16th once again with 5.24 metres. Delta Ag points were awarded to Ray Jennings 6, Dave Loftus 5, Judy Gorton 4, Gavin Holt 3, and Anthony Abra 2. Shot of the day: Information rapidly circulated throughout the course indicating that Nifty Nev had achieved a birdie on the par-3 12th hole. This event was reportedly quite noteworthy. I received little information about club selection, but I will do my best to make Nifty proud. Nifty lined up on the tee, ready for the shot of his life. After several club waggles, determining wind direction, barometric pressure, and other pre-shot routine elements, he hit a worm burner. His ball never became airborne. Rolling all the way to the back of the green, and then some. The ball finished well behind the green with a very challenging second shot awaiting. To his credit, Nifty Nev simply smiled and made his way to the back of the green. Despite difficult club selection, he chose his preferred club (7-iron) and played the most glorious skull imaginable. Another worm burner. Had the flagstick not intervened, Neville would have been playing his third shot from the 12th tee. Amazingly, Nifty Nev's ball, after hitting the flagstick, leapt approximately 60 centimetres and dropped into the hole for a birdie (2) and three points. No need to describe it; it's a two on the scorecard regardless of how it was obtained. Congratulations to Ray on his win and thank you to the players who supported our day. Next week we play for the Intersales Cup, a stroke event. Visitors are always welcome. Ladies Golf No golf on Wednesday due to the rain and cold weather. On Saturday ladies competed in the June Monthly Medal. Winner on the day was Di Starling with a 75 nett, followed by Cath New who also scored a 75 nett. Sunday Golf On Sunday 7 June the Temora Golf club proudly hosted a three person Ambrose competition which was organised by Jacinta Wendy and Sharon as part of their mission to raise money for MND research. A fantastic cause which was extremely well supported with 96 golfers taking part. There were amazing golf and raffle prizes and of course a big BBQ and soups to warm everyone up after golf. Jacinta, Wendy and Sharon are doing awesome work in raising funds through various raffles and sporting events to support Danihers Drive. Please get on board and continue to give generously. The golf was hotly contested with some great scores being had. Winners were the trio of Steve Steinhardt, Colby Poole and Ben Bickham who had 6 under par for a 60 5/6 nett score. Second place went to Aaron Coddington Steve Pike and Erin Pike who had 7 under par for 61 1/3 nett. Third place was Trevor Krause, Scott Sinclair and Andrew Crawford - 3 under par 62 1/2 nett. Fourth place was Dallas McKelvie, Liam McKelvie and Dave Moses - 3 under 62 5/6 nett Fifth place went to Dilrosh Jayawardene, Lewis Allen and Clarke Allen 63 2/3 nett. Ntps 3rd - Erin Pike 1.52m 7th - Aaron Coddington 54cm 12th - Dave Loftus 2.5m 16th - Nora Saffioti 5.96m The Bradman award went to club visitors Robyn Hocking, Kirk Hocking and Jill Johnstone. Thanks to all our visitors who came from Ariah Park, Stockinbingal and Young and also donated prizes to the raffle. Your support is much appreciated. We wish to also thank all those who helped on the day with all the jobs that go unnoticed but are essential to a successful event. Golf on Sunday 14th is the men’s monthly medal, Sunday 21 June is a 4bbb in conjunction with the Capital Chemist semi-finals. Ariah Park Golf We had nine players playing for the highly contested Vince Tyndall Day and I admit I was surprised to see that many turn up with the cold weather and being a long weekend, so to have that many was a blessing. After we all rugged up and put the heaters on in the golf carts, it was up, up and away. Nappa drew Zac and Pete Hocking on the first, Rocky with his free-flowing hair blowing in the wind drew Perko, Nodza drew Marney, Maree Merrill, so off we go. Nodza and Marney were off and started hitting their straps early with Rocky and Perko also starting well. Zac’s first shot. Well, I won’t put too much crap on him, but it was a shocker, as was Pete’s, so the day could only get better – you would think so, but no, no, no. Merrill wasn’t playing to her handicap either, so the only ones to play any decent golf on the first nine was myself (who was having a good time) and my better half Maree who was hitting the ball well and her putting has improved immensely, so she was going to be a threat. Now remember last week I meticulously informed you about the dunce chair. Well, nobody wants that chair at presso night, so myself, Zac, Ree, Pete, and Nodza were going all out to try and win the day. Sometimes the harder you try the worse you play (for some that is) and the poor birds (galahs) were having a reminder that golf was on as the poor things had little time to rest, as they would just get settled on a branch and then POW some idiot of a golfer would hit that tree and off they would go. So, this was the format for the day and the rabbits wouldn’t emerge from their burrows either. After about the 4/5 hole the sun did break through but for some the damage was already done as Marney, Nodza, Rocky, Perko, Zac and Merrill all struggled in the conditions, as poor Pete went galah bashing. He also produced some golf shots you wouldn’t find in any golfing manual. The Pinney’s were the only couple who could muster up a decent front nine score. The second nine did improve for some as Nodza pulled off a couple of good holes while Marney produced a bit of magic on occasions, while Rocky chipped in off the green a couple of times. But it was too little too late for his card, as was Perko who just couldn’t find that sweet spot on his club. Now talk about sweet spot, both my darling and I both were playing well, with me having four birdie putts (missed them all), but still got on the sand to at least have a crack. Need a bit more practice at putting on a damp and compacted sand green – (a bit quick to say the least) but we all had to play them as they were. Poor Zac was still struggling at times and at one stage his ball landed under my cart and I was five metres behind him, so that tells it as it was about his golfing shots. So, back to the clubhouse we go for a nice hot cuppa and a wonder stew cooked and prepared by none other than Captain Rocky. Well, we all said it was bloody nice – even his wife was impressed. So, thanks Rocky – you can make it again – if you remember what's in it. A job well done. Winner Winner – Rocky’s Dinner – Me (I’m out of the dunce chair) R.U. Ree Ree – Well played Maree. N.T.P. 3rd – Rocky – it fell out of his pocket while walking on the sand green. You know the old hole-in-the-pocket trick. N.T.P. 8th – No one got close. Shot of the Day (1) – Zac on the 4th tee – hit the big tree and bounced back to the flower bathtub – went approx. 10 metres forward, eight metres back. Only you could pull that one off Zac. Shot of the Day (2) – Zac again – 4th tee again – this time he caught the edge of the ball and it landed under my cart, five metres behind him. Talk about back spin. Funniest thing I’ve seen this year. Only you could pull that off Zac. Thanks everyone for turning up. We think do it all again next week – more stories to tell. Cheers – Preferred Lies Thanks Vince Tyndall for the day.
