Agriculture in focus at Canavan’s Temora visit

National Party leader and Queensland senator Matt Canavan was welcomed to Temora last week as part of a fundraising dinner in aid of Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke. Senator Canavan was joined on stage at the Temora Ex-Services Club by Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack for questions from the floor. “We had questions on everything from AI to energy, the cost-of-living crisis and our migration policy, which we’d announced the day before” Mr McCormack said. “There was a very broad cross-section of the agriculture and business community of Temora, it was a really good turnout.” The Nationals leader cited agricultural issues were at the forefront of discussions, such as the slowdown on working holiday visas with harvest on the horizon. “It’s great to see the rain that’s fallen here, but like most of the country there’s also a growing appreciation that things are not going in the right direction,” Mr Canavan said. “We’ve seen the National Farmers Federation say that unless the situation improves, we could see shortages of food on our shelves at Christmas, and prices are high enough as they are. “We need to protect the industries that legitimately do need overseas workers like farming and tourism “We won’t make changes to working holiday visas, we’ll protect the PALM Scheme and seek to re-establish the Ag Visa. “We’ll back our farming industry to make sure they have the tools they need to keep feeding our country while having a balanced and targeted migration policy.” In his trip to the Riverina Senator Canavan also spent time in Junee and Wagga Wagga before travelling north to the Hunter. Over 140 guests attended the dinner, with newly elected Bland Shire mayor Lisa Minogue and Riverina adult volunteer of the year Margaret Hill, of Junee, amongst them. A woollen suit from Rick Firman’s Menswear was auctioned and purchased by the Nationals leader, giving him something to remind him of his visit to town. All funds raised at the dinner were to support Ms Cooke as she seeks re-election when NSW voters go to the polls in March next year.
