Temora Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer, Steven Bloomfield, is reminding motorists to be vigilant and take extra care around private railway crossings, especially as freight movements are on the increase. Private railway crossings are a vital part of many rural properties, providing access for farmers, contractors and the emergency services. However, unlike public railway crossings, many private railway crossings don’t have boom gates or warning lights. That’s why it's essential to always: Stop before crossing Look carefully in both directions Listen for approaching trains Never assume the track is clear, even if you aren’t expecting a train Mr Bloomfield said trains can take hundreds of metres to stop and may be quieter than expected. Property owners also play an important role in keeping crossings safe by: Keeping vegetation clear to maintain visibility Maintaining crossing approaches Ensuring railway crossing signs remain visible and in good condition Whether you're driving a ute, tractor, truck or farm machinery, taking a few extra moments at every crossing could save a life. Rail safety is a shared responsibility, so stay alert, take your time and always cross safely.
