Temora Bowling Club Bowls Club Championships Last weekend produced a few surprising results in both the handicap pairs and the minor singles. The giant killing combination of Paul Cook and Bill Robertson were on the receiving end of similar treatment when Peter Harpley and Jon Wilson cruised through without too much fuss. Cook’s electric form over the past month came unplugged while Harpley and Wilson put together an eye-catching performance which is bound to have the remaining teams a little bit nervous. Bill Robertson was his usual solid self and single handedly kept his team just in range as they went down 17-23. Harpley and Wilson sit in the semi-finals awaiting the result of the John and Mike Tucker verses John Rayner and Glenn Breust quarter final. Rayner and Breust earnt their place in the quarters by getting the best of Ellis Breust and Wayne Stimson 20-15. Neville Elwin and Trevor Firman had a far easier day than they expected when they overcame Don Martin and Mick Daley 26-15. Martin and Daley have been hard to beat recently and constantly find ways to come from behind to win matches. Not this time though. Nora and Bruce Saffioti needed an extra end to defeat Wayne and Lisa Schulz after the scores were locked at 17-17 after the allotted 18 ends. The Saffioti’s got home 18-17 and now meet Greg and Rick McKinnon in the quarter finals where the winner will go on to play Elwin and Firman. The minor singles is slowly moving along with Don Martin downing Phil Reid 25-26 to earn a match-up with Glenn Breust in the quarter finals. The winner of that match will go on the play Rick McKinnon who looks as though his hiatus from the game for a number of years has not hurt one bit. Chris Cole has an appointment against Billy Moore in the quarters with the winner to go on and play the in-form Jon Wilson in the semi-finals. King Of The Turf Mein Gott!! We gotta start looking for a new Chief Steward. In Baseball, three strikes means you’re out. In King of the Turf, three strikes means Good Work Agent. Bomber Edwards was seen storming off with the developed prints, prizemoney, the kitchen sink and everything else after failing to win a protest of 18th against 1st last weekend. Edwards claimed he was a certainty beaten after Gabi Horan clearly saluted the judge in front of everyone else. Edwards was throwing his arms around ranting like a lunartic, “Gabi did this. Gabi did that.” He was last seen piling into Peter V’Landes limousine while wiping the spittle from his face with $100 notes. Shameful antics. Ladies Golf Last Wednesday, ladies played a “choice 14 holes” event, sponsored by Neil and Helen Martin. Winner on the day was Sue Alexander with a nett score of 56 2/3. Temora Vets Golf - Intersales Cup: Stroke Welcome to the winners' circle, David Meale. Dave (31) played some fantastic golf shots last Thursday. Dave shot a net 70, and his score was good enough to claim his first win and to receive maximum points in the Intersales Cup stroke event. It was a display of precision and composure that left his competitors trailing, as he navigated the challenging course layout with remarkable consistency. His ability to maintain focus under pressure proved decisive, securing him a well-deserved victory in this highly competitive round. Congratulations to Dave on such a stellar performance. Have you ever heard a golf ball scream? I'm exaggerating, but walk with Dave and watch him hit one. Honestly, after Dave’s drive on the 13th, I thought I heard his ball yell out, "bloody hell". He hits them as well as anyone. Phil Bleyer (14) took second place to Dave with a net 71 c/b. Phil recently returned from his American holiday, and it’s great to have him back. Ball prizes went to: Dave Loftus (6) net 71, Aaron Coddington (4) net 73, Ray Jennings (9) net 74, c/b, Anthony Madden (11) net 74, Bill Ingram (18) net 74. Intersales points were awarded to: David Meale received six points, Phil Bleyer 5, Dave Loftus 4, Ray Jennings 3, Bill Ingram 2, and as always, the other vets that participated and returned a score receive a point towards their Intersales tally. Nearest the pins: Ray Jennings hit a lovely high fade onto the 3rd green (4.18 metres) to claim the ball prize for that hole. Gavin Holt won the 7th with 3.75 metres, Aaron Coddington used a lob-wedge on the 12th, landing his ball just 1.07 metres from the hole. Mike Daley won the 16th with 9.27 metres. Mike wasn’t overly confident that the distance his ball was from the hole would hold up against the other nineteen players. He was urged to do so by one of his playing partners. Luckily, he listened. To the players who think that their ball isn’t close enough to the hole to win a prize, think again. If you are on the green and it’s a nearest the pin hole, or a drive and chip hole, put your name down. You never know. Otherwise, once the results have been verified and the prizes have been allocated, it’s too late. Drive and Chip: 3rd, Judy Gorton 4.00 metres, the 8th was won by Phil Lee with (get this one) 11 metres. Phil didn’t think twice about putting his name down. You just never know. The skins: Warren Bremer, Phil Bleyer, Bill Robertson, Aaron Coddington, and Dave Loftus won 5 skins for $5.00 each. David Meale 3, Ray Jennings 2, Sharon Wilmott, Judy Gorton, and Bill Ingram won a skin each. The kitty banked 3 for $3.00 towards the barbeque fund. Shot of the day: Warren Bremer was the talk of the club house. Playing the par-3 16th, and after an errant tee shot, Warren’s ball found its way into the trees and bushes on the left-hand side of the fairway. He didn’t seem to have a clear shot to the green. That’s what we all thought anyway. After assessing the situation, Warren scratched his head and grabbed his 7-iron. He gave his ball an almighty whack. Twigs, leaves, and rabbit dung flew everywhere; Warren’s ball emerged and tracked perfectly toward the hole, disappearing into the cup for a birdie 2, and five points. Yep, five points. But get this, and this is true. As he was lining up his shot, he yelled out that he couldn’t see the green, and we couldn’t see Warren. Warren had blended in with the flora. We had to hold the flagstick up in the air so he could get some sort of directional assistance. As I mentioned last week, it’s not how a score is obtained, all that matters is the score that is recorded. What a great shot though. Warren was looking triple bogey in the face, or worse, but anything can happen, and often does in this wonderful game. Congratulations Dave on your win, and well played, mate. For someone getting back into golf after a long layoff, you showed a lot of promise, and it will only get better. Welcome to the vets. Next week’s event on the 18 June, will be round 10 of the Delta Ag Shield, Stableford, and visitors are always welcome. I nearly forgot to thank Gavin Holt for his assistance with cooking the steaks and snags on the barbie. Thanks, Gavin; they did taste good, mate. Ariah Park Golf On a nice day for golf, we had 12 players turn up to play for the Lance Brophy sponsored Stableford event. The fairways have greened up and not much run anymore as the grass pulls the ball up quickly now, but no one is complaining as the whole is a sea of green and the mushrooms are plenty, so bring along a bucket and pick as many as you like. Captain Rocky picked the sides for this week with the battle between the brothers-in-law being Nodza and Peter, a ding dong battle. Was this pairing going to be Nappa and Merrill, Maree and Jackson, Zac and Rocky, Camo and Perko, Tim and John Burns, a visitor from the caravan park from Jervis Bay area and it was his first time putting on sand, so it was going to be a battle for him. But on a good note he had our famous Pom alongside him to guide the way, only to give him the dreaded tour of our timber land and wildlife sanctuary, and he was impressed by what he saw as was Tim who hadn't been in no man's land for a while, and it didn't take this team long to find the trees. Trouble was they found it too many times. The wildlife loves ya Tim. Jacko had one of his better days and hit some great shots (no tree trouble for him) and Maree was playing well also but got into trouble towards the later stages and missed a few putts but overall, she was happy with her game. Rocky started well with a birdie (not a feather one) and chipped in a couple of times but alas he got side tracked and just couldn't find those winning shots. Perko could and after a shocker last week reversed that form and was playing like a low handicapper, pulling off some great drives and ground strokes to return a very good score card, as well as Jacko. Zac found tree trouble on too many occasions and had trouble finding his ball (rabbits have them Zac). Camo played like a busted typewriter and was all over the place (not like him) but there is a golfing god and he works in mythical ways and for some unknown reason he picked on Camo and Zac this weekend. Now on the other side of the coin my game continued on from last week with some fine drives and fairway shots and of course my putts dropped so I was enjoying the day's golf and so was Merrill who also played well and even chipped in from about 30 metres out to save par, so the golfing gods were definitely with us both, and if only those last couple of putts had dropped in for her I'm sure she would have been the winner. But not to be. Now back to the brothers-in-law battle royal. Well, what a fizzer it turned out to be, as both players didn't light up the course as expected. Both found the scrub, both missed easy putts, both topped the ball on too many occasions and both ran out of beer. So, to sum up their day – CRAP. Next week the gods might be on your side and just a tip fellers – take an extra can with ya, it might just do the trick. So, on the perfect day for golf there could be only one winner and that was me. Yes, you read it right – winner winner. Nappa Pinney (Preferred Lies) – 49 pts Runner up – Merrill "Lost on a Count Back" – 49 pts Jacko and Perko did well also on – 43 pts N.T.P. 8th – Camo N.T.P. 3rd – No one again (what's going on) Lost balls – Zac 2, Peter 1, Nodza 1, Visitor 2, Tim 1 Shot of the day – Camo. Teed up on the Par 3 3rd hole. Whack. Hit the ladies tee and rebounded 20 metres behind him. Reload. Whack and again hit the ladies tee and rebounded back over his head again. Not third time lucky as he picked the ball up for a wipe on a par three. I've never ever seen him do that in my 27 years at the Royal Ariah Park Golf Club. Well, the man is human after all. Well done, Camo. Thanks everyone for playing and thank Maree for the lovely hot curried snags for afternoon tea. Cheers. See ya all again next week. Preferred Lies
